Project 1: Kanye

Kanye West is a man who can never truly escape the eye of the media. Whether he released recent music, is battling out other celebrities that target him (*cough, cough* Taylor Swift), or dealing with the typical, probably fake, drama that lies within the Kardashian family, the attention is always on him and his life. In more recent weeks, Kanye West has had an increased appearance in the media, more than usual, which is one reason as to why I decided to focus on him in Project #1.

One artifact that I would like to observe would be the effects of Taylor Swift’s newest song, “Look What You Made Me Do”. This song targeted not just Kanye West but also his wife, Kim Kardashian, as a response to his song “Famous” which had a lyric about Taylor in it. This whole “celebrity war” spawned from the famous VMA speech he made when he took the microphone out of Taylor’s hand.

Another artifact that I will be observing is the music video for Kanye’s song “Famous”. This music video caused a great deal of controversy upon its release. This video featured many pop culture icons all in a bed together. The message was not taken well and was a popular topic in the media for a while. One of the most recognized being Taylor Swift.

The final artifact that I will be observing in my project is Kanye’s Yeezy clothing line. His clothing line marked the beginning of a new fashion era. Immediately following the launch of his line major clothing lines began to mimic his design ideas.

All of these artifacts contribute to the overall brand that is Kanye West.
